Open Question: FAMILY EMERGENCY TRAVEL.... Does anyone know any tips to find the absolute CHEAPEST way to travel?

I've tried to find discount coupons (none work), I've compared Air, Rail and Bus. I've compared both round trips and one ways down & back. My funds are limited now, and hope to find any tip to find the absolute cheapest fares and means of transportation. I am in Syracuse, NY... my daughter in Virginia Beach, VA. It is a family emergency situation, and I need to get down there sometime this week. If certain days to travel are cheaper than others, or times of day, I would appreciate any tips to find how to locate the cheapest means to travel.
